In Alaska, landscaping is rarely included in new construction builds, leaving homeowners with a blank slate once the heavy machinery clears out. While this can be frustrating, it also opens the door for creativity and personalization. Fill dirt was brought in to contour the site, topsoil layered to support hardy vegetation, and hydroseed applied to jumpstart a green, low-maintenance lawn. The result is a landscape built from the ground up to reflect both the resilience of the environment and the character of those who call it home.

For this project we a simple patch of lawn behind the house into a functional and polished gravel patio framed with clean, block edging. What started as bare ground and builder-grade grass quickly evolved into a purposeful outdoor extension of the home. From the first chalk lines to the final layer of compacted gravel, this project showcases how thoughtful planning and simple materials can turn underused yard space into a clean, durable, and visually appealing patio built to thrive in Alaska’s unique climate.

This side yard transformation was aimed at converting a cluttered, underutilized space into a clean and functional gravel pad. The project began with the removal of dead trees and roots, followed by stump grinding and grading to ensure proper drainage and surface stability. Fence posts were installed in fresh concrete to define the yard’s perimeter and prepare for future improvements.
