Side Yard Transformation with Gravel Pad

This side yard transformation was aimed at converting a cluttered, underutilized space into a clean and functional gravel pad. The project began with the removal of dead trees and roots, followed by stump grinding and grading to ensure proper drainage and surface stability. Fence posts were installed in fresh concrete to define the yard’s perimeter and prepare for future improvements.

Scope of Work:

  1. Site Evaluation and Planning:
Assessed the side yard conditions, which featured compacted soil, minimal vegetation, and several standing trees. Identified drainage concerns, access limitations, and the need for clearing and leveling before hardscape installation.

  2. Clearing and Tree Removal: Removed obstructing trees and brush to open up usable space along the house and fence line. Stumps were professionally ground to prevent regrowth and allow for smooth grading.

  3. Excavation and Grading: Excavated the side yard to the desired depth, ensuring a consistent slope for water runoff away from structures. Defined clear borders using string lines and marking paint to guide installation.

  4. Post Installation and Concrete Footings: Set treated fence posts in concrete footings, ensuring durability and alignment with new grading. These posts were installed to support future fencing or framing along the property edge.

  5. Weed Barrier and Framing: Installed commercial-grade landscape fabric across the entire area to suppress weeds while allowing for water permeability. Framed the perimeter with treated timber to contain gravel and define clean lines.

  6. Gravel Installation and Finishing: Laid and compacted a thick gravel base layer across the full yard section. Used fine top gravel for a smoother finish. Final compaction created a stable, level pad suitable for trailer parking, storage, or multipurpose utility.

Challenges:

  • Dense Vegetation and Tree Obstructions:
The side yard contained multiple mature trees and thick brush that limited usable space and access. Safe tree removal and stump grinding were necessary to prepare the area for grading.

  • Uneven Terrain and Drainage Issues: The natural slope of the yard and compacted soil created pooling and inconsistent runoff. Proper grading was critical to prevent future water issues near the home’s foundation.

  • Tight Work Area: Limited space between the home and fence line required precision equipment and careful maneuvering during excavation, grading, and installation.

  • Post Placement Precision: Fence post installation had to be exact in both spacing and depth to maintain a straight line and ensure structural integrity once set in concrete.

Results:

  • Clean, Functional Side Yard: The project transformed a cluttered and unusable strip of land into a clean, graded, and professionally finished gravel pad, ideal for storage, trailer parking, or utility use.

  • Improved Drainage and Longevity: With proper slope and compacted gravel, the area now drains efficiently and will remain stable through Alaska’s freeze-thaw cycles.

  • Framed and Defined Space: Timber borders and post installations clearly define the yard’s edge, adding a structured look and preparing the space for future fencing or design upgrades.

  • Low Maintenance and High Utility: The use of weed barrier and gravel ensures this space will require minimal upkeep, delivering long-term value to the homeowner.

"This team absolutely crushed it. What started as an overgrown, unusable strip of land next to our house is now one of the cleanest, most functional spaces on the property. They handled everything—from tree removal and stump grinding to grading, weed control, and installing a full gravel pad—start to finish with precision. Communication was solid, the crew was professional, and every step was done with attention to detail. The post setting and border work were clean and perfectly aligned, and they left the space looking sharp and ready for whatever we need it for—parking, storage, or just a clean access path. It’s not just a gravel pad—it’s added real utility to our yard and looks great doing it. Couldn’t be happier with the result. Highly recommend."

Several large birch trees have been felled to clear the work area. A worker in the background begins sectioning the trunks while tree limbs lie across the ground. This step opened up space for grading and construction access.

The side yard is freshly excavated with a clean trench following a string line layout. Bright spray paint marks and stakes outline the perimeter, establishing the path for gravel placement and framing.

Landscape fabric covers the ground, secured inside a wooden frame that defines the shape of the gravel pad. This layer blocks weed growth while maintaining permeability, essential for long-term maintenance.

A mini skid steer with a stump grinder attachment is in action, removing tree stumps to ensure a flat, obstacle-free surface. Wood chips fly as the stump is ground down, a critical part of prepping the yard for a gravel pad.

A wooden post is shown freshly set in a poured concrete footing, with string lines stretched for accurate placement. This step ensures structural support for future fencing or edging along the yard.

The project nears completion with a cleanly compacted gravel surface running the length of the side yard. The wooden border keeps the gravel contained and creates a sharp visual separation from the surrounding landscape.
