Gravel Patio

For this project we a simple patch of lawn behind the house into a functional and polished gravel patio framed with clean, block edging. What started as bare ground and builder-grade grass quickly evolved into a purposeful outdoor extension of the home. From the first chalk lines to the final layer of compacted gravel, this project showcases how thoughtful planning and simple materials can turn underused yard space into a clean, durable, and visually appealing patio built to thrive in Alaska’s unique climate.

Duration

Scope of Work:

  1. Design Phase: Collaborated with the homeowners to create a simple yet effective layout that aligned with their goal of expanding usable outdoor space while maintaining a clean, low-maintenance look. The design emphasized functionality, incorporating a gravel patio for daily use and framed block borders to add definition and structure.

  2. Installation: Carefully marked out the patio footprint and excavated the area to ensure a level and well-draining base. Landscape fabric was laid to prevent weed growth, followed by compacted gravel layers to form a solid foundation. Concrete block edging was installed with precision to frame the patio, creating a crisp, durable border that complements the home’s exterior.

  3. Maintenance Plan: The patio was graded to promote proper water runoff away from the foundation. Final compaction gave the gravel a polished appearance and ensured stability for long-term use.

Challenges:

  • Climate Readiness: Creating a patio that could withstand Alaska’s freeze-thaw cycles and seasonal transitions required careful material selection and compaction techniques.

  • Space Definition: Blending the patio into the existing lawn while still giving it clear structure meant balancing clean lines with natural flow.

Results:

  • Refined Outdoor Space: The completed gravel patio provides a designated area for outdoor furniture, barbecues, or simply relaxing, enhancing the overall usability of the yard.

  • Visual Impact: The block border gives the patio a finished, intentional look that elevates the entire side yard without overwhelming it.

  • Durability and Simplicity: With minimal upkeep required, the patio is built to last and remain functional through Alaska’s unique seasons.

"Working with this crew was an absolute win. We started with a basic yard—typical new construction, nothing but grass and dirt. They turned that blank space into a clean, well-framed gravel patio that instantly made the yard more usable and put together. From the first planning stages, they listened to what we wanted and helped shape a design that made sense for the space and Alaska’s climate. They marked it out, excavated, and built it up layer by layer with real attention to detail. The compacted gravel is solid, drains well, and the block border gives it a finished, sharp look that ties it all together. Now we’ve got a spot for furniture, grilling, and hanging out—without tracking mud into the house. It’s simple, sturdy, and just what we needed. Highly recommend if you’re looking to bring structure and purpose to your yard without overcomplicating it."

After the grass was removed, a heavy-duty weed barrier was laid across the ground, anchored in place by concrete blocks. This barrier prevents future weed growth while allowing water drainage. The block layout begins to define the perimeter of the patio.

This photo showcases a completed side section of the gravel patio. The gravel is cleanly contained within a concrete block edge, forming a crisp and functional transition from the grass to the patio area beside the house.

The area is fully excavated, leveled, and compacted, ready for gravel placement. This step ensured proper drainage and created a stable base to support the final gravel layer and block border.
